PITTSBURGH (WSAZ) – Portsmouth, Ohio, native Al Oliver has been inducted into the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame.

Just like all baseball players, Oliver is loaded with stories about his career.

But there’s one story that only Oliver and the rest of the Pirates starting lineup from Sept. 1, 1971, can lay claim to. It was the first time in history that a Major League team fielded an all-Black lineup.

When asked about the lineup after the game, Pirates Manager Danny Murtaugh said he simply fielded the best players. He was right because the Pirates went on to win the World Series. Now that’s a story worth telling.
