FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — Records show district enrollment in Exceptional Children students has actually increased every year since at least 2020, raising the question, if these students aren't contributing to the district's overall enrollment drop, why is the EC program taking such a big hit in layoffs ?
District leaders say the changes still leave staffing below the maximum student-to-teacher caseloads recommended by the NC Department of Public Instruction.
Those recommendations have not been revised since 2021.
Nearly 160 EC teachers and teaching assistants are part of the reduction in force.
"As an EC teacher, we are constantly tasked, especially at the high school level, we get these students, and their needs, some are greater than others, but we focus on reading, we focus on mat
