ROCKVILLE, Md. — With the first day of school just days away, Montgomery County Public Schools are making a major change to how families see what their children are learning.
The shift comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6–3 in June that the school district must allow parents to opt their children out of lessons involving LGBTQ+–themed storybooks if those lessons conflict with religious beliefs. The case, Mahmoud v. Taylor, pitted local parents against MCPS, and SCOTUS sided with families who argued that their First Amendment rights were being violated.
