Kauai police say a visitor died Thursday evening after reportedly jumping from a cliffside into the ocean at Shipwreck Beach.

The swimmer has been identified as Jerome Hill, 39, of North Carolina.

First responders received an emergency call at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday for a swimmer in distress at Keoneloa Bay, popularly known as Shipwreck Beach, in Poipu.

“The individual reportedly jumped from the cliffside and encountered trouble in the water,” said the Kauai Police Department in a news release. “Bystanders swam out to assist and successfully brought him to shore. CPR was administered until personnel from the Kauai Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived and began advanced lifesaving efforts.”
