Students at Harriet Tubman Public School in St. Catharines will have an extra portable classroom this year to handle what its school board says is projected rising enrolment.

City council recently gave permission to add a third portable on city land.

The city and District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) have a licence and operating agreement to allow the board’s exclusive use of city lands next to the school on Henry Street.

The agreement is in place as long as the school, which opened in September 2015, is in operation.

A staff report said DSBN determined portable classrooms are necessary to support rising enrolment.

DSBN spokesperson Milica Petkovic said by email the school has about 670 students with projections indicating continued enrolment over the next decade.
