GREENE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - The Greene County School District is adding four new propane buses to its fleet in hopes of cutting down on costs.
In the past, the district has run an all-diesel fleet of school buses.
Greene County School District transportation director Stan Johnson says they paid $2.92 a gallon during their last fuel up.
For propane buses, Johnson says fueling costs are $1.30 a gallon and could go as low as $1.00 depending on a federal rebate.
Michael Harrison, a Greene County Schools mechanic, says the cost of a diesel-powered engine is between $15,000 and $25,000, while propane-powered engines are about $9,000, and that propane-powered engines don’t need to be replaced as often.
