WALHALLA, S.C. — The former chief of a South Carolina rescue squad has been arrested on an embezzlement charge, state agents said on Friday.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced the arrest of 49-year-old William David Tatum for actions he allegedly took during his time with the Walhalla Rescue Squad in Oconee County.

Warrants supplied by SLED said that, between Jan. 1, 2015, and May 1, 2022, Tatum used thousands of dollars in public funds for personal gain. The warrants provided in the announcement don't detail how those funds were used, but do allege that Tatum was charged specifically with embezzlement of public funds valued at $10,000 or more and that the funds were used for personal gain.

Agents served the warrant on Friday, and Tatum was booked at the Oconee
