NORTH CHARLESTON — Two of the region’s three largest municipalities are electing half of their city councils this fall. North Charleston isn’t one of them.

That’s because the city doesn’t stagger councilmember terms. All 10 districted council seats and the mayor are elected every four years. Both Mount Pleasant and Charleston councils serve four-year terms, too, but they elect half of the council every two years.

During an Aug. 21 meeting, Councilwoman Rhonda Jerome, who represents District 2 covering Midland Park and Pepperhill areas, initiated a discussion to change to staggered terms. She is one of the few longstanding councilmembers.

“With this last election, we almost completely overturned mayor and council,” she told the council. “And that's a very scary situation.”
