SALT LAKE CITY — A man was taken into police custody Wednesday after police say he caused $8,000 in damage to a car at the Salt Lake International Airport. He also allegedly said officers would have to shoot him to get him to stop.

A probable cause statement for the incident said 28-year-old Joshua Tirigue Smith grabbed a broom and broke the mirror off a vehicle in the airport’s rental car area.

Police said he caused other damage to the car as well, and the damage totaled to approximately $8,000.

Officers responded to reports of a disorderly man. When they arrived, police said Smith was “waiving the broom around and reported the officers were going to have to shoot him to get him to stop.”
