GREEN BAY — For last summer’s preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens, the Green Bay Packers sat 39 of the 90 players on their training-camp roster.

To Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, it was better safe than sorry. All 22 of his preferred starters got the night off, from quarterback Jordan Love on down, deciding rest was best in preparation for the team’s regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil 13 days later.

Although Love won’t play in Saturday afternoon’s matchup with the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau Field — as he recovers from Aug. 9 surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament on his left (non-throwing) hand — LaFleur said this week that he’ll be taking a decidedly different tack to this year’s last exhibition game.
