The New Jersey Historic Sites Council on Thursday issued a temporary denial of Ridgewood’s plan to build a multipurpose artificial turf field at the historic Zabriskie-Schedler property.

The Historic Sites Council voted 6 to 0 to withhold its recommendation that the DEP approve the controversial turf project, citing numerous deficiencies in the village’s application.

The resolution came at the end of long, two-part public hearing. More than 100 Ridgewood residents spoke out on an issue that has pitted parents who want more playing fields for their kids against environmentally-minded residents who say artificial turf doesn’t belong at a historic site and is harmful to the environment.
