Waves as high as a one-story house were crashing down into the surf zone at some Jersey Shore beaches during the height of Thursday’s turbulent seas stirred up by Hurricane Erin , according to beach officials and lifeguards in several coastal towns.
Breaking waves in Brigantine towered as high as 15 feet Thursday afternoon, lifeguards reported.
The Seaside Heights Beach Patrol reported similar monstrous waves, estimating the heights to be 10 to 15 feet at times.
In Manasquan, lifeguards said they saw breaking waves towering as high as 12 feet, double the size of a 6-foot person.
Along the beach in Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island, the beach patrol estimated the height of breaking waves at 15 feet and said some of the biggest ones may have stretched up to 20 feet, Police Chief Rober
