A multimillion-dollar cut to a Michigan State University program is reflecting a change in federal philosophy about how to fund healthy eating as President Donald Trump's administration looks to trim waste, and university educators worry about undercutting ways to promote nutrition and exercise.

Last month, MSU's Extension Office announced more than 90 staff members would be laid off after the federal government stopped the $10.5 million in grants that funded their roles in a nutrition program, but the shock of their loss was felt statewide.
