CENTERVILLE, Texas (KBTX) -Legislation aimed at halting large-scale groundwater exports from East Texas advanced this week in the Texas House.

Rep. Cody Harris, R-Palestine, says he is “very grateful” to Gov. Greg Abbott for adding groundwater protections to the second special session agenda, a move that allows his priority legislation to advance.

“Without that, we wouldn’t be able to move any legislation related to groundwater through at all,” Harris said. “House Bill 27, which fits within the language of the governor’s call, is what we heard in committee yesterday. It was voted out unanimously, and it will be headed to the House floor pretty soon.”
