Just four days before the start of the school year, hundreds of students with newly purchased uniforms learned their charter school in Prince George’s County, Maryland, is closing.

Prince George’s County Public Schools confirmed Excel Academy Public Charter School in Fort Washington surrendered its charter Thursday.

Parents who gathered across the street from Excel Friday described absolute shock in learning the school will not open its doors when the school year begins Tuesday.

The well-regarded school educated almost 500 students from kindergarten through eighth grade with a focus on the International Baccalaureate program, which is academically rigorous and fosters critical thinking.
