A memorial to young people lost to violence quickly is taking shape in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

The community is coping with a wave of teen violence underscored by a mass shooting in April that killed three young men .

“We’ve been bombarded,” said Shermel Lewis, who lost her 19-year-old nephew Brian Riley to gun violence. “We are mourning one and then another happened.”

“We really haven’t grasped the concern of how many children we are losing, how many young adults that we are losing so quickly,” she said.

Riley was killed July 15. Two juveniles were arrested.
