A nature reserve that was once a military testing site for elements of nuclear weapons isn't something you can just show up to visit. Incredibly, you can actually explore Orford Ness these days as it is now run by the National Trust , but you do have to plan ahead.

The shingle spit, which is just under a two-hour drive from Cambridge, is only accessible by ferry. Limited tickets are released two weeks in advance. I'm a National Trust member, so the ferry was only £4.50 but for adult non-members it is £14.
