Newark authorities are actively investigating a hit-and-run incident that left a pedestrian seriously injured late Friday night in the city’s North Ward.

According to preliminary reports, the collision occurred just before 10 p.m. near 347 Clifton Avenue.

Police were dispatched to the area after receiving reports of an injured individual lying in the roadway.

When officers arrived, they discovered an unidentified person suffering from severe injuries. Emergency medical services quickly transported the victim to University Hospital for treatment.

As of early Saturday morning, the victim's condition has not been released.

Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored SUV speed away from the scene immediately after the collision.
