North Iowa school districts are preparing for another round of changes to the state's Area Education Agencies that will impact the 2025-2026 school year.

Gov. Kim Reynolds signed HF 2612 in March 2024, bringing in a slew of changes to AEAs' funding and responsibilities.

The bill restructured the agencies and included more oversight from the Iowa Department of Education. The majority of the big changes took effect on July 1, 2024, but more alterations to AEA funding began July 1, 2025.

In 2024, 60% of AEA funding meant for media and educational services was redirected back to school districts, with the AEA retaining 40% of their usual budget for media and educational services.
