Golf developed a playoff system and a championship back in 2007. The format originally consisted of four tournaments for golfers to play in, concluding the golf season. It culminated with the TOUR Championship, and the golfer who made the field for each of the final four tournaments and tallied the cumulative lowest score would be awarded the FedEx Cup.

Starting in 2025, the playoffs consist of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship. Based on the point standings, 70 players are eligible for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The top 50 then advance to the BMW Championship. The top 30 following that tournament are then eligible for the TOUR
