A fire at Smitty's Supply Inc. in Roseland continued to pump smoke into the air Saturday, the day after an explosion at the facility sent black soot into the air and onto homes, cars and waterways.

State, federal and local officials gathered Saturday morning to give an update on their efforts, urging residents to limit their exposure to the air and black material that blanketed the area.

Many questions remain unanswered, but the only thing officials could say for certain is that the fire is still not under control, and they are unsure of when it will be.

During a sometimes contentious news conference in Amite, Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller bristled at questions from the media about the parish’s response Friday and overnight.
