The black moon reached its peak at 2:06 a.m. on Aug. 23, but it is still visible (or "invisible") on Saturday night.
The next black moon will occur in two years, on Aug. 31, 2027.
The " black moon ," a rare lunar phenomenon where a new moon is completely dark (allowing for 100% clear stargazing), may have reached its peak at 2:06 a.m. on Saturday, but stargazers who missed it are in luck — because the dark sky period will persist through tonight, August 23.
The black moon occurs when a third new moon takes place in a season with four new moons, or when a second new moon rises in a single calendar month, and, thus, if viewers don't catch it tonight, they'll be waiting until August of 2027 for the next one.
