MAKANDA, Ill. (HEARTLAND WEEKEND) - If you are looking for something fun to do outside this September, Giant City State Park has you covered.

You can try the Red Cedar Trail Challenge throughout the entire month. It is a rugged, 12-mile backpacking trail with ten strategically placed signs.

Take a selfie with each password sign and bring your pictures to the Visitor Center for an official Red Cedar patch.

The trail can be very difficult, and hikers may choose to walk the trail in sections or all at once. It takes a minimum of seven hours to hike the 12 miles.

Trail maps are available at the trailhead and the Giant City Visitors Center.

Another fun event is the Mysterious Stone Fort of Giant City State Park. This will take place Saturday, September 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
