SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sovereignty put on the show that most of the 48,255 fans in attendance wanted to see Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, capturing the 156th running of the Grade I, $1.25 million Travers Stakes with authority.

The spectacular 3-year-old colt became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Jim Dandy and Travers. Under regular rider Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty only faced four rivals in the 1 1/4-mile race, but galloped home to a 10-length victory in 2 minutes, 84 one-hundredths of a second. It was the third-fastest time since digital timing began, though both Thunder Rumble in 1992 and Easy Goer in 1989 ran times of 2:00 4/5.
