The blast of water roars to life, rattling the fire hose in Kyle Peters’ hands. Bracing himself against the pavement of Vancouver Fire Rescue Services’ training grounds in Strathcona, the Grade 11 student digs in his boots as the line bucks under the pressure.

“Keeping control of the hose is tough work,” said Peters, a Burnaby North secondary student from the Lilʼwat First Nation. “The water pressure pushes you back. We worked hard just to hold ourselves down so we didn’t go flying back.”

It took four students to steady the hose line from a fire truck from Vancouver’s Fire Hall 21, which services Musqueam First Nation and is decorated with a traditional Indigenous design.
