Residents living in and near the Wakefield Manor in Sidney are opposing the Town of Sidney’s plan to open its first Extreme Weather Shelter (EWR) for its unhoused population.

During extreme cold or hot weather events, the unhoused population in Sidney has no shelters available to escape the elements.

During the January 2024 cold snap, Victoria councillors said that nearby communities were transporting their unhoused population to the capital for shelter and services. That led to calls and formal motions being put forward to get other municipalities to open up EWRs.
