The expression “be of good cheer” is used various times in the New Testament as a means of encouragement in difficult situations. It has the idea of courage, anticipating something good coming out of something that looks overwhelming.

Jesus often used the expression “be of good cheer,” one example being when a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus by his friends. Matthew 9:2 tells us: “And, behold, they brought to him a man paralyzed, lying on a bed: and Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven you.” When the religious leaders questioned the authority of Jesus to forgive sins, he demonstrated his authority by saying to the man, “Arise, take up your bed and go to your house,” (Matthew 9:6) .
