STOCKTON, Calif. —

As summer draws to a close, the San Joaquin County sheriff's boating unit is ramping up patrols on the Delta waterways to ensure safety and prevent boating under the influence.

Deputy Sheriff John Canepa of the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said, "We're doing a lot of boating education out there, making sure they're getting their boater cards. But also, while we're doing these stops, we're making sure that everyone is boating safely. And that includes, if they're drinking and driving and making sure they're not impaired out here on the water."

Last year, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office led the state in BUI arrests with 20, a concern that continues to worry visitors to the Delta.
