North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test of new air defense missiles on Saturday, adding to his regime’s push to bolster its military capabilities that have ramped up tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea’s missile administration assessed the combat capabilities of two types of new air defense missiles with Kim and other top officials in attendance, state media KCNA reported.

The test comes as Kim’s regime shuns overtures from new South Korean President Lee Jae Myung for improved inter-Korean relations. North Korea has instead vowed to expand its nuclear arsenal and said there is no role for Seoul to play in regional diplomacy.
