Comedy icon Freddie Starr, formerly among Britain's most beloved entertainers, received a fitting farewell in the UK after a generous stranger came forward to cover his funeral costs when the star passed away penniless.

The performer, who amassed wealth during his golden years in the 1970s and 80s whilst presenting his own BBC show, died from a heart attack in 2019 aged 76.

At the time of his death, he was living in a modest one-bedroom flat on Spain's Costa del Sol and was reportedly at risk of homelessness.

Concerns rapidly grew that the eccentric comedian would face a pauper's funeral in Spain - a basic burial funded by the state for those without financial means, usually in an unmarked or communal grave - far removed from his wish to be laid to rest back in Britain.
