Moving the School of Medicine: Great for Sioux Falls, a betrayal to Vermillion
As a husband, father, and father-in-law of graduates of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine (proudly located in Vermillion) I write with more than a casual interest on the recent decision to move the school to Sioux Falls.
The official explanation cites “improved ability to recruit and retain future physicians.” This is very misleading. The Vermillion-based School of Medicine has never struggled with recruitment; in fact, it routinely turns away many highly qualified applicants. As for retention, this move runs counter to the school’s long-stated mission of producing physicians for rural South Dakota. Relocating to Sioux Falls will not inspire gradua
