DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran infielder Kevin Newman to a minor-league contract.

Newman, 32, was assigned to Triple-A Toledo and collected two hits in his debut Saturday night.

A first-round pick out of the University of Arizona in 2015 (19th overall), Newman has appeared in parts of eight big-league seasons since debuting with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018. After four years as Pittsburgh’s everyday middle infielder, he has since shifted into utility roles with the Cincinnati Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks and, most recently, the Los Angeles Angels, who released him at the trade deadline.
