Hazmat team responds after 55-gallon drum of chemicals dumped near Cottage Grove gas station

COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. -- Madison fire crews responded Sunday morning to a hazardous materials incident near a gas station in the Cottage Grove area.

The fire department said an unknown person in the 2700 block of County Hwy N dumped a 55-gallon drum of chemicals onto the ground and left the scene. Agencies from Cottage Grove responded just after 9:30 a.m.

Concerned by some of the placarding on the drum, they requested Madison Fire Department's HIT team for assistance at 10am. MFD remains on scene performing sampling on the contents of the drum.

There are no current threats to waterways or to any people in the area.
