TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — The third sewage spill of the summer occurred during the heavy storms on Saturday.
An estimated 40,000 gallons of sewage and stormwater mixture spilled into Horsepen Creek, according to a statement from the City of Tybee sent Sunday afternoon. This, after seeing over five inches of rain this weekend, which saturated the ground.
The city said it took immediate control, but despite efforts, manholes from Jones Avenue, 8th Street and other locations spilled.
"Crews worked through the afternoon to stop the spill and then worked into the evening to clean the spills up," said the city. "Sandbags already on location helped mitigate the spill."
