While filming the BBC period drama King and Conqueror , Happy Valley star James Norton and Game Of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau turned their character's on-screen rivalry into off-screen competition. ‌

In the eight-part series, James plays Harold of Wessex while Nikolaj takes on the role of William of Normandy, also known as William the Conqueror. Once friends, the two men's characters are destined to be on different sides in the 1066 battle for the English crown. ‌

James admits that although Nikolaj is a "a brilliant actor and a wonderful man," their off-screen rivalry began to mirror their on-screen conflict, as he felt the need to challenge his co-star once the cameras stopped rolling, the Mirror reports. ‌
