Those charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license. Police officials emphasized that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with safe driving, and drivers are urged to carefully follow directions and read warning labels about operating vehicles or heavy machinery. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
