SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — A team from Taiwan is the world champion of Little League Baseball.
But the Little League record books will show Chinese Taipei defeated Las Vegas, Nevada, 7-0.
Throughout a post-game news conference, the word Taiwan could be heard in answers by the manager and players to questions relayed to the interpreter Philip Chang.
Asked at the end of the news conference why he did not use Taiwan, Chang replied, Little League would not let them use it. “We are not allowed to,” he said.
He appreciated the question, he said, because it allowed him to clarify the situation.
The Taiwanese people consider their country an independent nation, while China considers it part of the mainland.
