SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane City Council is evaluating a new ordinance that could change how federal immigration officials operate at local events.

The proposed ordinance, known as “Safe and Welcome in Spokane,” would require federal immigration officers to present a warrant before entering private events held in public spaces.

Councilmember Kitty Klitzke explained the ordinance’s intent.

“It doesn’t really limit cooperation with federal authorities. It doesn’t really change the relationship that we have with federal authorities or not. It basically gives event coordinators the opportunity to require a warrant before they come in,” said Klitzke.

Local event organizers have noticed community concerns about immigration, which have already led to the cancellation of the Tacos and Tequila Fes
