TAMPA, Fla. — Shilo Sanders has been waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just a day after he was ejected from a preseason game for throwing a punch. A source familiar with the decision confirmed the news on Sunday, speaking on the condition of anonymity as the team has not publicly announced its roster cuts.
Sanders, the son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, was vying for a spot on the Buccaneers' roster after going undrafted from Colorado, where he played under his father. In addition to his ejection, he was penalized for pass interference during Tampa Bay's 23-19 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles addressed the incident, stating, "You can't throw punches in this league. It’s inexcusable. They're gonna get you every time. You gotta grow from that."
Despite his early promise, Sanders faced stiff competition for a roster position. He had shown potential as a hard-hitting safety during his preseason debut. However, during the game against Buffalo, he was involved in a physical exchange with Zach Davidson, which escalated to him throwing a punch, leading to his ejection.
The Buccaneers may still consider adding Sanders to their practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers. The preseason proved challenging for both of Deion Sanders' sons, as Shedeur Sanders, a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, struggled with his performance, completing only 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards and being sacked five times.
