Revellers and performers in bright costumes took to the streets for Notting Hill Carnival in West London on Sunday.
The two-day street festival is a celebration of Caribbean culture and attracts around 2 million revellers.
Around 7,000 police officers and staff are on duty at the carnival each day - and the use of live facial recognition technology is also being deployed.
Before the event, the Metropolitan Police arrested more than 100 people who had planned to go, and seized dozens of knives and firearms.
Some people have suggested that the festival would be better policed in London's Hyde Park. But this was given short shrift by carnival goers.
"It's a convenient way to box off Black people as usual, so no it shouldn't be moved to Hyde Park," one festival goer told UK broadcaster Sky.
