Class begins Monday for students at the University of Cincinnati. With more than 8,000 freshmen on campus, safety is top of mind.

UC has delt with petty crime, and even gunfire, around campus but the school has plans for security upgrades.

It received $250,000 in state safety grants earlier this year and plans to use it to build new barriers to stop cars around Nippert Stadium, as well as to buy new communications equipment to help officials respond more efficiently to emergencies.

Campus police work around the clock, but officials encourage new students to be aware.
