A 17-year-old boy drowned at Hampton Beach on Sunday evening after being pulled away from shore by a strong ocean current, New Hampshire State Police said.

The teenager was swimming with family members around 6:46 p.m. when the current swept him away from shore, according to police. His father entered the water to rescue him but also became distressed.

Hampton Beach lifeguards, who were off duty at the time, were called back and responded to the scene. They pulled both the teenager and his father from the water and began lifesaving efforts on the teen.

Both were transported to Exeter Hospital, where the teenager was pronounced dead. The father was treated and is in stable condition.

Police are withholding the victim's name because he was a minor.
