The MBTA announced that sections of the Orange Line north of Boston can now have trains reach 55 miles per hour, a speed that has never been documented before on the subway line.

According to the T, the increased speeds will impact stations between the Orange Line's northern terminus at Oak Grove in Malden and Assembly in Somerville.

The tracks were designed for trains to go 55 mph, but MBTA officials said that as the infrastructure declined, speeds were lowered for safety.

This will be the first time recorded that Orange Line trains reach 55 mph.

The higher speeds were expected to begin on Sunday.
