If you’ve been thinking that Jersey tomatoes have been in short supply this year, you’re right.

“Right now we can’t even get them,” said John Santori, general manager at Santori’s Produce and Deli Market, in Somers Point.

The produce market has had to resort to selling Canadian tomatoes while waiting for the next crop of Jerseys, which they anticipate this week. He described the crop this year as “below average” in supply, but the tomatoes that were available were big. One that he posted on his Instagram page was as large as his hand. But the supply was short lived.

“We had those big commercial tomatoes for a while that we were putting on sale that were gorgeous. But that dried up overnight,” added manager Gino Santori.
