MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning hunters not to put deer stands in ash trees this upcoming hunting season.
The DNR says many ash trees are dead or weakened by infestations of the emerald ash borer.
The invasive insects are confirmed in every county in the state, with sightings growing quickly all over Wisconsin.
Trees infested by the insects become very weak and unstable, making them unsafe for deer stands.
Tree stand accidents are the leading cause of serious injuries to hunters. Aspirus Health says there are 300 to 400 fatal falls from tree stands across the U.S. every year.
Placing your stand in a safe spot is the best way to avoid accidents. Get advice on tree stand and harness safety on this DNR website .
