Phil and Penny Knight are doing what all billionaires, millionaires and everyone else should do, (“ Phil and Penny Knight pledge $2 billion to OHSU to ‘revolutionize’ cancer care, ” Aug. 14). We should be philanthropic and give money to fund medical research, food and health programs, education, and other important programs and services that help all of us.

Forget the federal government, because it’s quite apparent that this current administration has no inclination to fund anything unless it is in complete control, demanding concessions and draconian measures to advance an authoritarian agenda. The only way to counter these drastic measures is to provide funding with private money so we are not beholden to the federal government. Let’s follow the lead of the Knights.
