OLD TOWN, Maine — A large lizard has been spotted in Old Town.
The reptile was reportedly seen Sunday evening in the area of Hillside Avenue, according to a news release Old Town police posted on their social media page.
Police said its current location is unknown, and they're asking the public to be aware.
The department said they initially believed it was a monitor lizard, but they now believe it may be a tegu, after they received feedback from the community.
"Tegus have sharp teeth and claws and strong jaws," police said in the post. "While not inherently aggressive, they can lash out if they feel threatened."
Police are asking the public to keep their eyes out for the roving reptile.
If it's spotted, police ask that people not approach it but instead to contact their department
