A FIRE erupted in the cabin of an American Airlines jet after a passenger's device burst into flames, sparking chaos mid-air.
The scare forced the plane to divert and land at Washington Dulles International Airport.
The flight had taken off from Philadelphia on Saturday morning and was bound for Phoenix when the incident unfolded.
American Airlines confirmed smoke was seen coming from the device before crew members jumped into action.
“The device was quickly contained by crew members prior to landing,” the airline said.
Flight 357 was carrying 160 passengers and six crew when the emergency struck.
The aircraft landed safely at Dulles at about 11:50 am, where fire crews were waiting on the runway.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it is now investigating what went wrong.
