A rare human case of New World screwworm has been reported in the U.S ., but Michigan residents are safe from the parasite for now.

An outbreak of the flesh-eating parasite in Central America is underway, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said while reporting the first U.S. travel-associated human case in a Maryland patient who recently visited to El Salvador, Reuters said.

The parasite was eradicated the the U.S. by 1966, according to the U.S. Congress.

The Maryland Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the parasite as a travel-related New World screwworm case on Aug. 4.

HHS spokesperson Andrew G. Nixon said this remains an isolated case without significant dangers to Americans, including Michiganders.
