With a strong core returning this fall, there is plenty of optimism for Belgrade boys soccer following a tough campaign a year ago. The team won just one match, which was the fewest since going winless in the program’s first year in Class AA in 2019.
Fifth-year head coach Dr. Robert Lemley said numbers are up with just over 40 athletes who participated in tryouts, and the Panthers will field full varsity and JV squads.
“It was our largest turnout for numbers ever, which was really good,” he said. “We decided to not go with eighth grade inclusion because that would have made two large teams that would have been pretty diluted with not a lot of game time. So this is the first year since I’ve been there, going into my fifth year, that we’ve had to make cuts and we only made four cuts.”
